Below is a list of birds that you are likely to see on your visit to the Daintree and what birds you can expect to see through the various seasons.

Spring is a treat with the Pied Imperial Pigeons and Metallic Starlings returning from winter in New Guinea while the Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfishers arrive for their breeding season. Common Koels and Channel-billed Cuckoos also return at this time.

Summer is the Wet Season which is an excellent time for birding. The spring arrivals are joined by the Black Bittern which can be often seen on the river or beside the numerous creeks and waterways. Kingfishers abound, including the Buff Breasted Paradise Kingfisher which migrates from New Guinea to breed in termite mounds in the rainforests of North Queensland.

Whilst autumn sees the departure of the migrants to warmer climates, we are joined by Dollar Birds and Rainbow Bee-eaters which add to our colourful regulars.

Our common residents include the iconic Southern Cassowary which is endemic to these rainforests. These shy birds are often spotted by the side of the roads but occasionally pass through our backyard to eat the Blue Quandong and other fruits and seeds. They may be inquisitive but won’t harm you. Never feed any birds in the wild and don’t run from the Cassowary.

The Wompoo Fruit-Doves often nest in the trees in front of our balcony and can be heard most days with their distinctive call of “wom-poooooo”. Spotted Catbirds can be seen happily eating the fruits of the many Blue Quandong trees, though the blend in to the rainforest so you’ll need a keen eye to spot them. Monarchs and Flycatchers pass through, and the raptors will be building their nests.

Azure Kingfishers zoom up and down our stream, often giving a toot as the pass by the house. They can be seen fishing for small fish or fresh-water crayfish from a dead branch or rock in or beside the stream. Lucky, we have lots of small fish and little crays! The Olive Backed Sunbirds can be found around our gardens every day. You’ll hear their happy little chirps and see them darting from flower to flower gathering nectar. We have many flowering plants in our gardens to entice them and the many butterflies that never fail to delight! You may even see the sunbirds looking at themselves in your car mirrors.

Birds are just one part of the Daintree’s wonder. The Daintree rainforest is home to ancient trees and rare plants, as well as rare and unusual and in some cases unique insects, frogs and mammals. Whether you are a seasoned birder or just curious about rainforest life, the Daintree offers endless rewards.
